About Open Wings

The people behind Open Wings

Open Wings is guided by a founder, a board of directors, and a board of reference who bring a wide range of expertise, and a shared belief that every child deserves a school built around them.

School leadership

Founder

Kim Hufferd-Ackles, PhD

Kim carried the dream of a school where students would walk through the doors smiling for years before it became real in 2012. She earned her PhD from Northwestern University and has devoted more than a decade to supporting the students, teachers, and families of Open Wings. She is also the mother of four.

School Director

Alicia Johnson

Alicia leads the school day to day. She holds a bachelor's in special education with a behavioral-disorders emphasis and taught in an alternative high school before joining Open Wings as a classroom teacher.
