Learning beyond the classroom

At Open Wings, the community is an extension of the classroom. Field experiences are not occasional rewards or end-of-year outings. They are a core part of how we teach: interactive, curriculum-linked, and woven into the rhythm of every school week.

What makes our field experiences different

Linked to what students are learning

Every field experience connects directly to a unit of study. When students are learning about ecosystems, they visit wetlands. When they study history, they walk through it. The classroom extends into the community.

Hands-on, not just observing

These are interactive experiences. Students do not just look at exhibits or listen to talks. They ask questions, solve problems, collect data, and create. Learning in the field is learning by doing.

Part of every week, not a rare treat

Open Wings takes more than 20 field experiences per year, in addition to regular walking trips to local libraries, parks, and playgrounds. Community engagement is built into the rhythm of the school, not saved for special occasions.

Community visitors bring the world in

When the field cannot come to us, the community does. Guest experts, local professionals, artists, and community members visit the classroom to share their knowledge and life experiences with students.

Where our students go

Field experiences span every subject area. Over the course of a year, students explore:

  • Agriculture and farming
  • Museums and cultural institutions
  • Local history and community landmarks
  • Science and nature (wetlands, parks, nature centers)
  • Theater, drama, and the performing arts
  • Visual arts and studio visits
  • Trades and working professionals
  • Libraries and literacy programs

Most field experience expenses are covered by the school. Occasionally a nominal fee applies for special outings.

“The multiple field trips that this school offers the students are always educational and in many instances, they relate directly to our own community. This has afforded Logan the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, to learn subjects such as agriculture, farming, the arts, history, science and trades.”
